IDEA19: a lethal weapon on ORC club racing ?
Michele, the owner/builder of IDEA19 “Muchacha”, after a few season of successful racing in a simplified “no rating” system club racing, chose to “go big” and few weeks ago decided to require an official ORC rating certificate for his boat;
(ORC is the most widespread rating system for sailboat racing in Europe) ; basiacally ORC and IRC are rating system: their purpose is to eqaliza boat performances to allow different boats racing together, every rating system has its strong point and flaws, but the biggest pro is that virtually any boat can have her rating and compete with others.
the ORC rating certificate for his idea19 (fitted with masthead gennaker and swinging bowsprit) gave a GPH of 736 , wich is in my humble opinion quite high , especially in wind ranging from 12 to 20 knots , a range in which idea19 begins to plane steadily going downwind , clocking easily speeds in excess of 10-12 knots (clocked +14 knots on 22 knots of real wind ) , and can easily go for a steady 6 knots upwind.
GPH stays for Global Purpose Handicap, which is basically a swiss knife of rating systems , since it sums up the different areas of performance (upwind , downwind) in a single number, keeping the work quite simple for those who’ll have to write down the rankings at the end of the regattas
will this rating make IDEA19 a “lethal weapon” on ORC rating regattas ??? we’ll wait and see, for now let’s take a look at this very good video (by the way, they won…)
